MUSIC PARENTS’ STORY
The Community Vision – Calvert Music Centre
Community access was at the heart of the submissions to create a purpose-built music facility on the campus of SFSHS.
Since the Music Program has settled in to the Music Centre, the Parents’ Committee has moved to actively promote the Centre to the community as a sensational music venue for community use.
Our vision is to provide the facilities out of school hours at very affordable rates. We want to encourage established and emerging musicians to use the Centre to further their music – for rehearsals, performances, workshops and recording sessions.
It has already proved a popular concert venue for local piano students to showcase their work to parents and friends.
In July 2008 an inaugural Recording Workshop was held for students during school holidays, successfully producing an original CD that has been nominated as a finalist in the WAM "Song of the Year" competition for 2008.
We want to encourage young people to use the Centre, and the percussion studio makes an ideal space for band rehearsals.
The community has direct access to the Centre from the Pass Crescent entrance. The facility itself is sound-proof and the music will not disturb our neighbours.
We hope the community will embrace the venue and enjoy the many benefits of the Centre. We look forward to forging long-lasting relationships between community musicians and our student music program.
